Pedant hat - on!

I am not a 'hun'. Still less am I a 'hunny'. What *is* a 'hunny' anyway? It's something Winnie-the-Pooh eats, I think. I am not a substance consumed by fictional characters. Neither am I a 'hon', or a 'honny'. If I am anything remotely like this, I am a 'honey'. What, for crying out loud, is wrong with the standard spelling of that word? What? H O N E Y. Like the thing that bees make. Which is sweet and delicious. Which are the attributes that, in this particular use of metaphor, one is applying to the person thus described. Honey, therefore, is appropriate. Hunny, and any other mind-bogglingly redundant variations or abbreviations, are not appropriate, since those Are Not Words, and therefore Do Not Carry The Same Connotations.

I don't much like being called 'hon' in speech, either. It annoys me. Mostly because I can hear people spelling it 'hun' and I am definitely not one of the horde of Attila. So there.

Pedant hat - removed!

I use it for some people, and you know what? I really don't care that it's not a word. If we all only ever used words that already exist, what an incredibly dull language it would be. "honey" to me, is patronising and probably comes with a load of guilt (just my thought of the word), but I like hun, so I use it.

Sorry hun.. er. sweetz... err babs.. er LUCY!
