Pedant hat - on!

I am not a 'hun'. Still less am I a 'hunny'. What *is* a 'hunny' anyway? It's something Winnie-the-Pooh eats, I think. I am not a substance consumed by fictional characters. Neither am I a 'hon', or a 'honny'. If I am anything remotely like this, I am a 'honey'. What, for crying out loud, is wrong with the standard spelling of that word? What? H O N E Y. Like the thing that bees make. Which is sweet and delicious. Which are the attributes that, in this particular use of metaphor, one is applying to the person thus described. Honey, therefore, is appropriate. Hunny, and any other mind-bogglingly redundant variations or abbreviations, are not appropriate, since those Are Not Words, and therefore Do Not Carry The Same Connotations.

I don't much like being called 'hon' in speech, either. It annoys me. Mostly because I can hear people spelling it 'hun' and I am definitely not one of the horde of Attila. So there.

Pedant hat - removed!

*begs forgiveness* I know I do it... I have a long list of alternate things to say/type instead of repeating names. Its a byproduct of my crap memory for names.

Will try to avoid doing so in future, sorry!

Not necessarily. You have just given me the idea of calling someone 'honey' to indicate that they are clingy, sticky, viscous and prone to mould. I might have to start using that :-)

actually honey isn't prone to mould. It has too much sugar in it. It does crystalise as the water evaporates but that's about it. Honey was found as part of Egyptian burials of pharohs, that was still perfectly good to eat.

Hun. Opposite of Celt. That's Celt with an 's', obv. Where's [profile] inskauldrak when you need him?

Right here on an afternoon's leave doing washing and suchlike ; )

And yes, in that context being called a Hun is shorthand for: orangesectarianracistviciousb*****d

Whilst Celt (where c=s) is rarely used unless you support Celtic, otherwise you would use either
a) fenian c**t (if a 'Hun')
b) one of the Bhoys (if a Celtic fan who's mildy into sectarianism)
c) Tim (moderately affectionate term used by those who aren't sectarian but make jokes about it... when they know no-one else is about, although the source of the term is as much to do with the old name for the neutral fans' bit of Parkhead as was as anything else)

NB: all of the above, if prefixed with "those b*****d/f*****g/expletive ad infinitum actually then translate as:

"I support Partick Thistle, they just scored a goal against us... as usual" ; )

Well, we won't be scoring many goals against you next season, eh?

No, not a fool, just being deliberately offensive ; )

Btw, what's it like working for 'The Labour Group'? ... not that I'm looking at new jobs and such a position might be coming up?

Do you want me to see what I can find out, eg why the previous person left? Otherwise more generally I could e-mail you the sort of stuff I do. It's not rocket science as a job, a lot of it is just being able to take in a vast amount of nonsense and remember the important bits, and then get on with people. The Mayor of Lewisham needed one too, dunno if you've missed the deadline for that. Off the record there's another authority in Yorkshire that will almost certainly need one in July, but you might not want to live there?

Yorkshire would be a bit of a lurch. Otherwise, if you wouldn't mind doing a wee bit of asking around and suchlike I'd certainly appreciate it! : ) My email's on the userinfo page.

Oh btw, are you on the YL yahoogroup? Two amusing posts out of the last three (unless there were any this afternoon) and the one in between was me being nice.

I don't appear to be, no. Mind you I only qualify for another, er, 6 months. I'll see what I can find out.

Hmmm... actually, I'm seriously guilty of calling people 'honey'. But as my defense, I must remind people I come from 'The South' where things like 'honey', 'sugar', 'sweetiepie' etc are all used as terms of endearment from children, lovers, and even the random polite stranger. I've lost quite a bit of my normal usage of these words, however, I do use 'honey' and 'hon' quite alot. It's in my very fibre, I tell ya! ;)

Words evolve and take on new meaning. There are way too few words in the English language as it is, so you shouldn't begrudge it for adopting more whenever it has the opportunity.

evolution is a very, very different thing from laziness with spelling.

I thought "hon" (rhymes with "gone") was some weird American endearment and never realised it was an abbreviation for honey.

How do you feel about "Frank Cooper's Oxford Marmalade" as a term of endearment?

From: [identity profile] faerierhona.livejournal.com
I use it for some people, and you know what? I really don't care that it's not a word. If we all only ever used words that already exist, what an incredibly dull language it would be. "honey" to me, is patronising and probably comes with a load of guilt (just my thought of the word), but I like hun, so I use it.

Sorry hun.. er. sweetz... err babs.. er LUCY!
