Okay, thanks for the responses to the last entry about minimum necessary belongings - useful ideas and food for thought there! Now a more practical question - if you were going to pack up several rooms' worth of stuff into boxes, and you didn't have a car or a lot of money, where would you get the boxes? I can bus myself to a self-storage place that sells boxes, but I think they are rather expensive. I've tried the 'ask at local convenience store' thing, and it worked but also resulted in the chap at the shop getting Too Interested in me. *sigh*

I have a lot of spares that I'm not going to need this year. Will you be at Polyday? If it's not too late and you will be there, I will happily bring some of them down with me.

Just let me know :)
I would be coming by train, and I'll have more Stuff than you as I'm staying in London from Saturday morning until Tuesday evening, so if I can manage, I'm sure you'll be able to? Also, I can provide one big box instead of a few small ones, or two medium boxes, or something, if it's easier?

Oh, yes, and just let me know when you have made a firm plan. As long as I know by about 6am on Saturday, I can have boxes in London for you :)

Try Freecycle? I quite regularly see boxes being offered and requested on my local list. Otherwise, there are some places which do boxes by mail-order which are cheaper than the self-storage places (which are indeed expensive), though they're still likely to be a bit more than your budget's likely to cope with, I would guess.

Our local Homebase has boxes available; if you have one of those around, maybe worth asking? Or at the local supermarket. Also, wine merchants might be a good place to ask for smaller boxes suitable for packing books into.

Seconded on the wine merchants - I picked up a lot of boxes from my local Vicky Wine, and, while sub-optimal for packing, they were ideal for transporting. It's impossible to fill them so full you can't lift them, you see :-)

If you do end up having to buy them, here are the useful Argos' ones to compare against the storage company's options - since they do home delivery, they may also be more convenient than attempting to haul flat packs across town:

They do have a 3-4 bedroom pack that's even bigger, but that's probably larger than you need! :)

The latter two also come with rolls of tape, but that's probably less critical to your decision process than number/size of boxes.

I've got a bunch of tea-chest sized boxes, and some smaller banana boxes (open tray style) that Rhona was going to have, but that never happened. Getting some packing tape for them is easy enough. If you want, I could bring them over on Wed or Thursday.

Talk to uni admin - apart from anything else, they will have lots of conveniently-sized boxes that reams of photocopy.printing paper come in.

Rymans have 9 boxes for the price of 7 at the moment. They're sturdy and a good size. When I move I put my clothes into bin bags - they don't need to be in anything else really and it's easy to squash them into a car or whatever.

I'm getting my boxes from work. Can you ask your uni admin department for their stationary boxes? They're sturdy.

Also, supermarkets' customer service desks can be really nice if you pop in regularly. Find out when they get deliveries.
