I've been told by Mr. Greene (my boss) that he's not happy enough with my rate of accuracy in completing tasks to continue to employ me while he is on holiday and unable to oversee my work. He originally suggested this meant he'd fire me, but I just about talked him out of that. Since the month he's away contains my week's holiday with family, and my moving house, I convinced him I wouldn't really be able to look for other work in the interim anyway, so he is happy to re-employ me when he returns - on August 15th or thereabouts.

So I finish tomorrow, and have a month off. With no pay. Which is not the end of the world, but is still pretty fucking disheartening.

I SO DIDN'T NEED THIS TODAY.

why is he not concerned about not having given you a contract of employment ? hr at my place of ork got very agitated after i'd been there for 5.5 months and still hadn't been given a contract, as it would have been bad news for them had they not done it by six months (don't know why, but that's the way round it was, apparently). even then, it took the ceo another month and a half to get round to it ...

pretty shitty situation though. sympathies.

Believe it or not, not having a contract puts you in a very strong position legally. There are a set of default rights conferred, and until you sign a contract, they all apply. I am not a lawyer, so don't know the precise details, but should there be any problem before a contract materialises, it may be worth consulting an employment lawyer.
Of course, employment rights at a place you've been working for for less than a year are not exactly spiffy anyway, but it might help.

Citizens Advice Bureau is also worth a shot, and likely to be a less expensive option than a lawyer.
