I don't actually do standard cross-stitch :) I have some Aida, some embroudery floss, and some downloaded jpgs of historical embroidery patterns which I mangle, edit and mine for ideas. I have only one project on the go at the moment (has been for about a year) which is an altered Tudor-ish design of stylised flowers, which I am doing in green and red (the design did not specify colour). The fun bit is changing it to something I like and find attractive and then the interesting bit (for me) of placing the stitches for best thread usage (because I am crap, there is probably a normal way to do this but I don't know it) and producing something I can hang on the wall.

I have also done small ramed cross-stitch pieces for friends when younger, which were also images I made up. It is not hard to create a cross-stitchable layout from a picture you like. I may at some point also embroider costume.

That said, I don't do it often at all and it probably shouldn't be on the list.
