Geek help: Gmail

Is there any way, in Gmail/Google Mail, to delete en masse all the messages associated with a particular label or a search result? I want to clean up my Freecycle label - the messages have been delivered into my Archive (I set it to skip the inbox) and there are a ridiculously huge number of them which I just can't delete 20 at a time.

Does Gmail offer access via IMAP? You could access it through a real mail client like Kmail, delete the messages there and synch back up?

I believe they started doing IMAP and POP3 recently, so Real Mail Clients ought to be an option.

The select all sadly only counts for the messages displayed at the time but you can change the number of displayed messages.
Go to Settings, General tab and change the Maximum page size to 100, that should at least cut down the time needed.

Yes (because i do the same with Freecycle).

Click on "all", it will then give a small link option under the top saying something like:

All 100 conversations on this page are selected. Select all 137 conversations in "Freecycle"

(i have mine set to 100 mails/page)

If you click on that link it will let you delete them all (though will flash a pop-up box to go "are you sure"), which makes it easier.

yeah basically if you do a search on something can select all and it will ask if you want to delete them all. Likewise I do it everynow and then with freecycle and other stuff as well.

That's fabulous, thank you - I have worked out why I hadn't noticed it before (I wasn't selecting 'all' because there were a very few messages i want to keep, but I can retrieve those from the Bin if I am desperate), Ace!

Remove the tag from the ones you want to keep (either pop them to your inbox or 'star' them) and then its not a problem :D

Ah, even better. I don't have more than 20 convs in one filter so that didn't come up.
