Does anyone on my friends list, or reading this, have any familiarity with the field of linguistics (more specifically, the sociolinguistics of English, but any linguistics will do) and feel able to talk to me via net or phone about the core concepts, sometime before Thursday?

I am studying a first-year module in 'English Language and Society' and am very far behind; I am finding I need some help in constructing a basic framework of concepts from which to hang more detailed stuff (about persuasive language, langauge education, etc.). My exam is Thursday afternoon...

If you have friends who might help please point them here. I could potentially offer some kind of financial recompense.

[livejournal.com profile] dextress has a degree in English Language & Linguistics - you might want to ask her.

Was about to suggest [livejournal.com profile] dextress. Do you have her phone number?

If not I'll text it to you. :-)

[livejournal.com profile] vyvyan is a very talented linguistics person, and I believe teaches it for the OU. Based in Cambridge, though, so might not be ideal.

It's over 10 years since I studied any of this, but if you can't find anybody more confident of their knowledge and/or who's studied it more recently then I could try to have a look through some notes, um, tomorrow, with a view to having a chat on Wednesday? (If you do want to take me up on this then it'd be useful to have an idea of what sort of questions you were asking / likely to be asked in the exam...)

Hiya, [livejournal.com profile] randomchris pointed me in your direction. Please feel free to give me a shout if I can be of any help - I'm a MA student studying corpus linguistics, but I have done modules in sociolinguistics as an undergraduate.

The book that clarified a lot of things for me is Janet Holmes' An Introduction to Sociolinguistics - I don't know if you've tried that already, but if you haven't, it may be worth trying to borrow a copy.

If you don't get help elsewhere, then [livejournal.com profile] hieroglyphe knows a great deal about linguistics, and I can point her at this post.

I believe [livejournal.com profile] flashqz did some linguistics before moving to another degree. I think [Unknown site tag] has a degree in linguistics (she certainly works in translation).

Both are local to Reading.

Ah! I worked with her then later found out that she know's Nic's twin Rob through school. Rob is one of my best friends and roleplays with me and Lucy in Exalted - although I've never met Nic.

Crazy small world.

Hiya. I did this core module in my first year of degree too & then specialised in it later - I love it! I would be very happy to talk to you on the phone about the core concepts, especially as it will be a local Reading call. How about tomorrow morning? This will give me a chance to get the textbook off the shelf too. Yay!
