I need to find a catchall word for the things I have to do for university which isn't 'work', because that word is causing me some issues (it seems).

Something short would be good, so not 'assignments'. It can't be too specific, as I have things which are not 'essays'. I might try 'projects'. Any other ideas?

If I wanted to be managerial I'd suggest 'challenges' ;)
'Pieces', perhaps?

"Projects" was the thing that sprung to my mind.

Of course, you could call them "tickets", using Request Tracker parlance.

Brian is a good name. Or Geoff. Geoff is also good.

... or, 'excuse me, I just have to get started on Brian.' amusing comment potential abounds! ^_^

I'm guessing "homework" is no good either?

I tend to use "stuff". Or "reading" which for me covers lots of things including, er, writing essays.

That's why you told me yesterday that you'd been reading then? ;p

Projects are good.

On my desk at w*rk I have a sheet of paper headed "to do" with lots of post-it notes stuck to it. Each one has a different task written on it, and I throw the note away when it's complete. I'm non-specific on how I designate these tasks more widely.

Projects (like Essays) can be work, so I would avoid that term as well.

We have a "Overheads" designation which covers non-productive uses of time, from filling in forms, meetings, drinking tea, tidying your desk and all the thousand and one things that work isn't, which isn't your own time either.. :D

You could just call it 'wirk', and always say it with a comedy Jordie accent! As in 'Am ganna do some wirk now'.
