Dammit!
I went shopping again this afternoon, and managed to buy the cloth and beads I needed for roleplaying this weekend. However, the other day I noticed a very nice brown suede-look top with a lace-up front on a mannequin in a town-centre charity shop. "Aha!", I thought, "perfect for wearing over blouses for my Rat character!".
I went in today. They still had it, and it's a size 14, which is ok, and it was a good price, so I bought it. I've got it home and tried it on - and I love it! It's gorgeous! It's got a little fold-over collar, and long sleeves which widen towards the wrists, and it's soft and strokeable and lovely!
The problem is, if I'm going to use it for LRP I'm going to want to chop off the collar and probably the sleeves, so I can wear big puffy muslin shirts underneath. And I can't bring myself to do it! I can't! It's too nice!
So I am up one lovely everyday top, and minus one roleplay costume. This is a bit awkward, as I really need something else for the ratgirl that isn't also part of my tribal-healer outfit. Bah! Not sure what to do. :/

Date: Thursday, 12 October 2006 05:56 pm (UTC)What I may do is try to attach the brown linen-look fabric I also picked up to the neckline as a sort of raggedy drape to disguise the collar.

Date: Thursday, 12 October 2006 06:28 pm (UTC)Tip - this is a bit confusing but I'll try to explain:
If you lick your finger, quickly wind one end of your tacking thread round it a few times, then form a ring with (the other) finger and thumb below the thread, and firmly pull the resultant ring of thread off, you will find that with a simple tug of the long end of the thread, you will get a nice tangly, not-going-anywhere knot, that's big enough to not pull through fabric weave.
It's much quicker for starting off a tacking thread than stitching over-and-over, and doesn't yank on the fabric as much.

Date: Thursday, 12 October 2006 09:14 pm (UTC)I have all the material I need andfor my new Rat outfit it's all in s*ding Newcastle. Gah! Damn the removal men for not doing the dates I really wanted.
On the plus side this means I may well organise a sewing weekend for making Rat kit and Rat banners if you're inetrested. Probably the 4th/5th November.

As for rat costume overall look - I've just gone really scraggy and rough, I've got no particular look apart from furs and brown material really. And sewing random bits onto the kit like shells/nuts/tiny bits of chainmail - that type of thing :).

Date: Thursday, 12 October 2006 10:27 pm (UTC)Having tried on all the Rat costume and done the makeup and hair, I have discovered a character concept and just have to stat it. I think I'm going for a youthful, insanely curious ratgirl, who loves TEH SHINY and comes across as a bit of a ditz, but is actually pretty smart and interested in complicated things like horology and making things go bang and noisy fireworks and pretty books and funny people and...
Does this tread on anyone's toes? Sound ok?

Anyone who isn't a rat but hangs around with them are considered the rats 'pets', we've already got two - although I don't think they quite realise it yet :D
