(Yeah, I do see what you mean. I use ICQ, which means no one talks to me any more because they all ran off to join the 1001 other instant messaging services which have popped up since the days when ICQ was the only one. But the Linux clients for most of the other services, if they exist at all, are crap[1][2]. The great things about LJ's jabber service are (a) it's based on open standards, and (b) every LiveJournal user automatically has an account.)

[1] Of course, so is the official Java-based ICQ client, but I've been using Licq since forever and it's not bad.

[2] I think gaim supports most of them, but I don't like it.

If you're still Mac-based, http://www.adiumx.com might be handy. Multiple IM protocols in the same client (see also Gaim). However, you forego some of the 'features' like animated smileys.
