Friday, 21 October 2005 10:49 amI am back from my hospital trip!
Background: when I was two I had a squint operated on. For the last few months I have noticed my eyes drifting out of line again, so I went to the GP to see if this was a problem. He instantly referred me to the hospital, and so I had an orthoptic and an ophthalmology appointment this morning. I had my vision tested thoroughly, and then saw a proper eye whatsit consultant chappie.
It turns out that the effect I am experiencing is normal, or at least, to be expected at this age and this much time after the original surgery. It is a cosmetic problem rather than a serious practical one at the moment, and it's not even very bad, and given that there's a limited number of times you can do this surgery, the later we leave it the better. So I've to wait, and if it gets much worse (another 5 degrees out, not that that means much to me!) I can be re-referred and surgery is a possibility. There's no standard time-frame in which that might happen, though. There are also small risks of negative consequences (like double vision) so again, it's better to wait till the surgery is necessary. The downside is that it probably *will* be necessary in a number of years' time. (note to self: it was previously convergent, and now it's divergent.)
The funny thing is that I really can't tell how bad my eyes are, because there isn't any effect on my vision that I notice, and in a mirror obviously any squint is very visible to me. It will apparently be more obvious to someone who's further away from me. So what I need is a friend who will sit a table-width away from me and tell me how funny my eyes look, because that's the distance at which I would want it to look right :)
Because I was at the hospital anyway, I popped over to the Audiology drop-in hearing aid session, and got an impression taken for a new earmould, as I have stupidly lost the old one. Fortunately I still have the aid itself. Anyway, that was all fine and went smoothly, although my ear still feels funny where it had silicone gunk stuffed down it. And then I came home!
This afternoon I am off to the Southern Regional with
aardnebby. I must find a Big Stick to hit him with.
