'In the Calm Hour of Evening' song lyrics
Friday, 1 August 2003 04:43 pmThis is a song my mother used to sing me to sleep with as a child. I searched for it using Google and found nothing, which intrigues me. Does anyone else know it, or anything about it and where it comes from? (Please point friends who are interested in traditional songs at this post, or tell me about communities who could help or would be interested. I am English, I presume the song is British or at least European in origin, possibly with Celtic roots.) The tune is lovely and haunting, and if there is interest I may find a way to record an mp3 and put it up somewhere so people can hear it.
Lyrics:
In the calm hour of evening
As the seagulls fly low
To their rocks on the island
And they cry as they go
From each house on the headland
Lights begin to twinkle in the gloom
And the pale cold world dwindles
To a warm quiet room.
Let us sit by the fireside
And remember our friends
For each day ends in darkness
But hope never ends
When the last catch is hauled in
And the last boat brought to shore
We will all sit together
Divided no more.
