I went to a job agency yesterday! *bounce*
I went to Select. I'd not been there before - I started off trying to visit Reed, but their office was so hard to get into (1st floor, door shut, no answer to bell) I decided I couldn't be bothered to stand about looking like a fool and webt elsewhere.
Select were nice and helpful, and there's a permanent admin job with a non-profit they're putting me forward for. They aren't asking me to sign up till they have me work sorted, and they want a couple of weeks' exclusivity to find me something before I go elsewhere. It's all fine by me. So, I have a little while to laze about (and, er, do house stuff).
I did a little shopping yesterday too, and bought printer paperm tracing paper, two cheap t-shirts, two cheap CDs, and assorted bits and pieces. I'm going to customise the T-shirts :) Also, two books from Amazon arrived - 'Fruits' (a photo-book of Japanese street fashion) and a book of kimono designs.
Happyhappyhappy :)

Date: Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:17 am (UTC)Reed are probably worth persevering with. I know it's like any chain, that the quality of service depends strongly on the quality of staff in the local branch, but I really feel that they looked at my CV more than other agencies. They also rang me every week or two to check I was still available, even though there was no work. No other agency ever gave me that kind of occasional sonar ping. It felt like they were taking as much interest in me as I was in work.
Avoid Action Recruitment, Susan Hamilton and all its subsidiaries. Again this is only based on one branch's experience, but... well, see my journal today...!
Select never got back to me, but I think they were in the process of closing their Oxford branch.

Date: Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:37 am (UTC)I actually found that after filling in info they contacted me rather than vice versa to arrange face to face chat ('you'll do' kinda feeling), but I've got to say i found it a bit bit skewed towards their benefit rather than being any sort of a working partnership.
YMMV

Date: Thursday, 28 August 2003 01:49 am (UTC)That said, having been on both ends of the Temping game (I temped for best part of 20 years and I've been in charge of hiring them and signing their sheets), Reed would not be my first choice. Though I did work for them when I was in Reading (this was a quarter century ago).
I know a very good agency with a contract at High Wycombe Hospital, if you're interested.
On the whole, I had a better time with small, independent agencies than the chains.

Date: Thursday, 28 August 2003 02:03 am (UTC)Yeah, I guess so. I've been working for them for the past few weeks, and on their books for a couple of months now, and I haven't even visited their website. I suppose that's the phenomenon of the chain, although independent temp agencies I trust as much as independent property agencies.
