As a followup to my email worries, would it be more sensible to just set things up to do everything on chiark itself? Archiving, storage, filtering, etc.?

I might need some help to do that. Or even help to take Chris's advice about POP3 or whatever. But not till my room is tidier.

Assuming you trust chiark to be reliable, it's a good idea.

At the moment, I access my e-mail (and IRC) from wherever I have net access by SSH'ing to cpio.org where I keep a mail program running even when I'm not using it. It's a bit clunky, and mutt takes a little getting used to, but it works just fine once you get used to it. Server-side filtering is always a good idea if you use this method or IMAP since your mails will always be in the same place and filtered in the same way no matter which mail program you use to interact with it.

Well, when it comes down to it it depends on what you want. If you have your archiving and storage on chiark then it means your mail is not available offline generally. Well, it could be but you need to take it into account when planning it.
