I think the short answer is that just as an ASD can be part of 'who a person is', deafness can be part of the whole package of a person, their body, their experiences and their identity. It's not about something they are 'missing out on' - how about all the hearing people who are 'missing out on' Deaf culture and the expressiveness of sign languages, for example?
