Finish marathon phonecall to deranged illiterate marketing droid. Decide brief chocolate-raisin-break is in order. Pick up this morning's Grauniad. Flip to G2. Briefly flick through ranting about Cherie's alternative-therapy nutters and assorted other snippets. Turn, all unwitting, to page 8. Jump in fright as am confronted with bloody great photo spread of Will Straw looking boggle-eyed and soaking wet in a fetching anorak-and-placard ensemble on the recent students' fees demo. It's the bloody 'Style' section! The headline is 'The new Mr Darcy?'! There's an inset photo of Colin Firth!

I wonder how Will feels to have been labelled 'true political totty'? This is the chap who chaired our college JCR meetings for a year, to whom I was once really rather rude though I forget how and why (I had a good reason which then turned out to be mistaken), who I still sometimes see when hanging about in town. People I know aren't supposed to be labelled major sex symbols!

What are we coming to?

That makes me wonder - do you know my little sister? She went to New College (just graduated this last year) and knew Will Straw slightly. She did maths, and was on the college rowing team, and then coached them last year (I think).

She's called Kate, and is tall and kinda blonde/brunette if that makes sense. Doesn't do student politics, but did live in college and stuff.

So that means I can't be labelled a major sex symbol then?

Kate Brewer - that's the one. Can't remember if she was in the A team or the B team in 1999 - I do remember her doing the Christchurch regatta.

Well...she's graduated now, she's still going out with Ben (the tall person who coached you all - can't remember his surname) and she's temping right now before going off to do conservation work in Guyana in January. She's staying with my dad in Lambourn, near Oxford and I phoned her about five minutes ago to say "I know someone who knows you! And she's a role player - it's not just me who does that!"

Ben's lovely...he and Kate have been going out for 2 and a half years now or something? *ponders how long the tall person has been around the house when she goes home* Yeah - 2 1/2 years or something.

She did a lot of rowing but knackered her knees pretty badly in her third year and ended up coaching instead. She does remember you - I asked her.

It is a very small world! I found out the other day that Krys used to share a flat with an old friend of mine from school.

You thought it was unacceptable for a student representative to have an opinion on whether Oxford should be a welcoming environment for Nazis and Holocaust deniers, if I am remembering the same incident that you are, and remembering it correctly.

I still don't get this. 'There are likely to be people from Combat 18 in Oxford next week, so watch out, oh and by the way here's something you can do about it'... The house next door is private and expensive, but if it were on fire, I'd be keen to know.
