Gosh, enormous thanks to everyone who's commented/emailed me about my linguistics worrying last night. The reason for my lack of response is that I have been actually reading the textbooks, and finding that the situation is not so dire as I had feared. Trudgill in particular is marvellous. So I feel more confident that I can get myself reasonably up to speed for the exam, and won't need to take up most of the help offered. Saffie has offered me some specific notes on language and gender, which is an area which will be especially useful, so that is much appreciated; and I may well try to speak to

dextress too. Otherwise, you can stand down from your postions of readiness, with my profuse gratitude.

On an unrelated note, I am out of phone credit and Orange is not bloody letting me top up, so I cannot phone you or reply to texts. I am not ignoring you. It's very annoying. :(
