Bicon trains

taimatsuI have looked up trains to Leicester from Oxford, and they're easy; one change at either Coventry (quicker by a hair) or Birmingham New Street. I need advice about booking. I don't have any student/young person's Railcard; I guess there's some central booking line to phone. How far in advance does one need to book to get any discount fares?
