I'm so bored! I feel like I still need to stay in bed, but I am much more awake than I was yesterday. I can't seem to concentrate on books for more than a few minutes at a time. Any suggestions for things I could do?

Mostly things that you may not have: talking books I find easier to follow when I'm exhausted (and if you fall asleep you can always rewind them later); Puzzler magazines (lo! staple mental diet of the over-80s and the Ellys); putting photos into photo albums if such a thing could do with being done.

Two things you only need pen and paper for that I do sometimes when I'm feeling utterly poo but need an occupation: writing little quizzes for Nick to do, and making little puzzles (wordsearches or crosswords usually) of some kind for Nick to do. Utterly childish but Nick likes doing them and I like making them so it's all good. :) Or just write the basics for an online personality quiz and then put it on quizilla when you're feeling better. :)

If I think of any more I'll comment again. It's always the most frustrating bit of recovery from 'flu-like things, I know...

Ooh, I like the bubble wrap. None of the others really grabbed me, but thank you anyway.

(Anyone know any more like these? ie reasonably interesting games that don't need a fast computer or any particular plugin or a huge amount of time commitment?)

I've previously mentioned Mancala (http://imagiware.com/mancala/) which could occupy you for 5-10 minutes (I found it quite hard to beat the computer even on the easy setting). I've also mentioned in passing itsyourturn.com (http://www.itsyourturn.com/) which only has two-player games, but apparently you can (though I've never tried it) easily find a random stranger to play against if none of your friends happen to be online at the time.

I've played both of the above in Mozilla with JavaScript turned off and no plugins to speak of (as I can't get any to work on my ancient Red Hat 5 box).

Princess Maker 2 is a good game to suck up time for hours on end. There's an English beta version of it that you should be able to download from http://www.sailororion.net/fun/princessmaker.html . It's a DOS-based game, though, so it may not work on your computer very well (works well enough on Win95/98). It's a child-rearing sim from Gainax where you, as a wandering soldier who saved a kingdom from an army of demons, are given a child by the gods to raise. You raise her from age 10-18, and send her to class and to work and on vacations to raise and lower her various stats, and in the end she takes on a career and (usually) marries someone. The goal of the game is to get her to marry the prince (go figure, the game *is* called Princess Maker). It's a lot of fun and addicting as all hell :)
