I had IBS for years, and I found a couple of things that worked - warm baths, hot water bottles, and neurophen.
However it was only about 18 months ago that I found a really simple solution - a glass of wine in the evening seems to sort all the discomfort out.
I later bought a bottle of Creme de Menthe (the peppermint liqueur) for medicinal purposes!
It makes sense actually, because when I saw a doctor he basically gave me anti spasmodic drugs, alcohol is a muscle relaxant so I think it just stopped everything tensing up.
You really only need a glass or so tho, anymore is probably going to make you feel more crap.
I have just worked out why my temporary solution made a difference. It wasn't alcohol, though. (And it *was* just TMI.) I slept last night because I was so tired from dealing with it all, so I now feel fairly awake, but my stomach is still gurgling and uncomfortable. Argh.
Bit late now, but peppermint tea or chamomile tea will help. Chamomile is good before bed too, as it's quite calming.
If it continues, you can buy Colpermin over the counter, which is peppermint oil based, and will help with the discomfort. Even sucking a mint (Extra-Strong Mints have the most peppermint oil in, as opposed to mint flavouring) will help a little bit.
