That's when good neighbours become... good and dead.

Bloody next door idiots are playing loud music, as they have at least every other day since I moved in. This time it's *really* loud, *really* pointlessly drum-focussed (can't stand this style of music except on the odd occasion in a nightclub) and I can't close the damn windows because it's too hot! There is nowhere in the house where I can't hear it. I am going slowly insane and I don't know what to do. I would go and knock on their door and ask them to JUST FUCKING TURN IT OFF ALREADY but I'm too chicken to do that without Robert to back me up. I just don't think I should have to listen to their choice of music all sodding day instead of mine. Yes? Am I being unreasonable here? What is wrong with these stupid assholes? I think I am going to put on the Scary Bitches... really loud. *evil grin*

For many years now I have wanted to invent a device that EXPLODES all kinds of audio equipment which is playing music I don't like at excessive volume.

The concept of headphones fails to occur to some people.

Here, we frequently get other people's music and/or TVs at higher volume in our flat than I would ever want to hear it at.

Yes, windows are open and walls are thin. But, a couple of days ago, I was out in the garden whilst Ashley had the stereo on in here (at adequate volume) and I could hardly hear it. I'm sure the neighbours couldn't hear it at all.

I've tried blasting them with Vivaldi and Hole but they don't seem to notice.

I did once complain to a neighbour who had his car radio on ridiculously loud whilst he was washing his car. He looked at me aghast and explained that it was Saturday.

I blame modern society.

Presumably people who don't like Vivaldi or Hole are allowed to have similar devices for exploding your stereo?

I hate this kind of situation. When I was living off Cowley Road it was awful - all those student houses, and almost impossible to track down which house it was that was playing the music even if I wanted to go and complain (which I generally didn't, being chicken too). I did regularly complain to the woman upstairs when she got stoned/drunk and played the same sodding record over and over at full volume at 3am (which she did quite often). Here we don't get it often, but two rows of terraces with back-to-back gardens means again it's almost impossible to identify the offenders when it does happen.

Next door just do DIY at weird hours (but since I made a mild complaint at 8 months pregnant they've been really good about telling us when they're going to start early, and so on).

There's always the possiblity they don't realise they're being a nuisance; in the house I lived a few years ago we had the opposite problem in that we had extremely noise-sensitive neighbours who worked night shifts and thin walls, and they didn't bother to come and tell us that they could hear it and it annoyed them when playstation games were played in the back room or when we talked in the garden of an afternoon. Eventually they told the housing agency, who told us, and we went round and talked to the people next door about it and everything was sorted out in about two seconds. Which it would have been if they'd just asked us the first time they wanted to sleep in the afternoon and could hear us instead of suffering a month of worse and worse irritation.
Just to put the other possibility, and all that. Although from what you've said above the situation sounds a bit different.

Why not try asking them politely to turn the music down first?

If they're "stupid assholes" for playing loud music (and you've no reason to believe that they're doing it just to annoy you), what does that make you for playing loud music with the deliberate intention of annoying them?

Talking to them with Robert seems pretty reasonable.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm afraid to go outside of my house alone because my next door neighbor is renting a room out to some strange guy who walks around the block extremely slowly without a shirt on... just shorts and slippers, and it wouldn't hurt him to lose 20 pounds either.
