Bishop of Reading... or not.
Jeffry John has announced he will be withdrawing his acceptance of the post of suffragan Bishop of Reading. He's the gay priest everyone's been making a fuss about. I find this incredibly sad, but at least he won't be subject to the sniping for years and years to come.
This Guardian article expresses very succintly the problem with bashing the Bible when opposing homosexuality - the Bible says far more about other societal rules which the Church no longer upholds (eg. the subordination of women).

His argument was that given Lev. was a nutter and Old Testament, and Paul was merely an apostle, surely both should be read in the context of Jesus telling us to love everyone.
REligious thread, anyone?

Leviticus is harder to dismiss as it is less ambiguous. HEre's the text.
1. Leviticus 18:22-23 ";You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion."
2. Leviticus 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon them."
(from http://www.str.org/free/studies/homo_lev.htm )
There is nowt in the Gospels about gayness.
The point the Guardian article is making is that people cite Jesus freeing us from the Mosaic Law when explaining why women get to teach in church and so on, but thy don't want to apply that to gay people too. Argh.
