The charger for my macbook is giving up. My dad insists it's probably a loose connection, I think it might be overheating, but either way, I have about ten minutes of power left in the battery, and my Linux desktop won't get online at the moment so I may be without internets for some while. I am miserable at the moment and this is not going to help, not to mention slowing down my house-hunt and job-hunt. I'm pissed off. I am going to have to get some sort of replacement, probably at the Apple Store in Manchester this coming weekend (if I can manage to get there at all); it ought to be in warranty as it was bought in December 2007 but I don't think I registered it and so I don't know what to do about it. Thoughts welcome. I'll have to go to the uni library to read them, obviously.

FWIW, I've not had trouble with not having registered, with warranty claims. As long as you have a proof of purchase you should be fine. I'd offer to lend you a power supply, but none of mine will talk to newfangled Macbooks, I'm afraid. :-/

Where was it bought? Do you have evidence of buying it on credit card? You don't need to have registered it for the warranty to apply. The store where it was bought will probably have evidence of it being sold, for example. I'd go back to them in the first place, anyway, to describe the problem. Stores aren't in the habit of accusing of past and potential customers of being lying about something that has broken down, and you have rights such that it is worth their while treating you as saying the truth and maybe losing the cost of a charger rather than being taken to court.

Edit I don't know how the rights thing applies in an international situation, though.

When the charger on my powerbook overheated, I was told that it wasn't covered by the warranty, as it's counted as an accessory/consumable, not part of the computer itself. So you may find that you have no choice but to buy a new one.

Is it one of the power supplies which is connected to the laptop by a magnetic thingumwatsit? I mention this because mine is, and I had a very similar problem last year which was down to a known design fault with mac power supplies (the wire comes loose at the point where it's joined to the magnetic thingumwhatsit). If it is that problem, then the apple store will probably replace it no questions asked.

Apple will have a record of when it was bought, so you'll likely be fine just taking it to an apple store without proof of purchase.

The Apple store will be able to track the purchase using the computer's serial and when I went to the Apple store in the Manchester Arndale, the Genius Bar had no problems providing a power supply for me to find the serial number on my laptop when I didn't have mine with me, so that should be okay.

(The serial number can then be tracked so they know when it was purchased and they should really give you a new charger on warranty.)
